ANOTHER LANDMARK IS LOST TO LITERARY HISTORY It survived a firebombing in 1989 for its support of First Amendment Rights only to end its half-century existence to the economic times. Cody's Books, a San Francisco area legend closed its doors on June 20th. Having earlier closed its branches in San Francisco and another Berkley location, it sole remaining store located on Shattuck Street in Berkley is now no more. The writing on the wall appeared a few months ago when the store rent nearly tripled, and after a further staff layoff, books sales could not sustain the extra burden. Sadly, Cody's has gone the way of far too many independent bookstores. It was founded in 1956 by Fred and Pat Cody and has gone through a number of hands since then. UNINVITED GUEST EDITORIAL By: SÉRGIO PRATA Our Man in Brazil Personal Che - From Poetical Jesus to Christ If Roland Barthes (1915 - 1980) was alive and writing his indispensable "Mythologies", published for the first time in 1957, he certainly would have include a chapter about Che Guevara. The release of the new documentary "Personal Che" cannot cite Barthes directly, but it is a minuscule analysis of the construction of a contemporary myth. From a complex and multifaceted form, the film by Brazilian Douglas Duarte and Columbian Adriana Marino traveled the globe to investigate the various image remakings suffered by the Argentinian revolutionary that was a part of the success of the Cuban revolution and died attempting to implant the same by way of a guerrilla war in Bolivia where he was executed in 1967 with the assistance of the American CIA. Immortalized by photographs taken by Alberto Korda and captured by the language of mythology, the figure of Che has little footing in facts. According to Barthes the function of myth is to "transform an eventuality into eternity" in a process of "deformation" that "eliminates the quality of history. In myth the reality is lost in the production. This process is clearly evident in the film that shows various examples of the veneration of Che. He arrived at sainthood or in otherwise was converted from Jesus to Christ. In the region of Bolivia where he died his personage has been in fact made into a saint and he is venerated as such. The Directors of the film avoid intellectualizing in excess this discussion, but they do not avoid the analysis entirely. Well organized the documentary offers enough information necessary to observe the process without losing the view of his human side. In the end, the myth wins. Little known is the fact that Che fancied himself and poet, and an admirer of classical poetry. For his poem, "Song to Fidel", he wrote: And when we will arrive at the place of battle For the work of purification against tyranny, Here, at your side, ready for the last battle, We will have it. With the aid of myth, his battle will rage for eternity, and his image used by all those claiming his cause from the truly oppressed to the fascist on both extremes who claim the same.
